Frequently asked Questions & Answers

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS about Kew Primary (from the Education Subcommittee)

Q: Is there a traffic management plan at KPS?
A: The school does not have a specific traffic management plan in place. In recent years (2004/2005) the School Council negotiated with traffic management officers from the City of Boroondara to alter parking restrictions that allow for the most efficient movement of traffic and to allow the optimum use of available street parking space for families of Kew students, keeping in  mind the nature of Peel and Pakington Streets and the needs of local residents. Additionally the school this year participated in a City of Boroondara survey on travel methods to school, the results of which have just been received and will help develop a Green Travel Plan for distribution to our community.

Q: Does the school have a standard process to communicate to parents if a major incident occurs eg. classroom evacuation

A: The only method of communication in such an instance currently is via telephone, email and our website. In case of a whole school evacuation, the current plan requires the staff to walk all students to the garden area adjacent to the Kew Library. We are investigating the use of an SMS broadcast option that would allow the school to text message all parents' mobile phones in such an instance.

Q: Why is the swimming program usually run in intensive blocks?

A: The benefits of an intensive swimming program are…

   i) the frequency of access to the water

ii) the availability of the qualified instructors

iii) to build upon skill development at a faster rate.

As a school, we need to look at the curriculum requirements and decide (usually as a Unit Level) when the program will cause the least disruption to the other quality programs being delivered.

Q: Why is the "no nut recommendation" a recommendation only and not a
policy?

A: Some children at Kew Primary School (KPS) are allergic, and some even
anaphylactic to nuts. The school asks all children and parents to minimize
the risk of harm to these children by not bringing any nuts or products
containing nuts to school.
Since the school cannot guarantee that everyone adheres to this (without
searching bags and pockets), this means that the NO NUTS recommendation at
KPS cannot be a policy.

Thank you for supporting the school by not allowing any nuts or products
containing nuts to enter KPS.
