Learning Resource Centre

computersThe Learning Resource Centre is a hub of activity and is integral to our educational program. Our staff aim to provide an active working environment in which students research and study with confidence. Information Literacy skills are valued as essential support for student learning.

The decision to relocate the computer lab reflects a philosophy that our Department and many international education systems espouse: “It is now widely recognised that students’ learning outcomes are strongly influenced by their learning environments. How quickly children are engaged, and become willing and enthusiastic participants, depends on how their learning spaces are designed and utilised, and on the quality of teaching and the richness of the curriculum”. (Victorian Government - Building Futures).

In February we officially ‘opened’ our Learning Resource Centre (LRC) formerly known as ‘the Library’. We have this year changed a number of our rooms around, with the old computer lab now a Year 6 classroom, and the LRC becoming the central housing point for ICT and the many literary resources available.

We have also upgraded every classroom’s computer allocation with nearly 100 new desktops being purchased, an upgrade to cabling, switches and network servers completing the work. It will provide state-of-the-art access to computer technology and greatly support our children’s learning – remembering that all of our students have grown up in the technology age and see the provision of such sophisticated technology as just part of their life experience.

Creating the right environment will always benefit student learning. An article written by William Dittoe titled “Seriously cool places: The future of learning, Centred built environments”, reinforces this notion. Click on the downloadable file to read his article. Seriously Cool Places

off to town Students work with a wide range of innovative technolgies including robotics, ipods, lap tops and desktop computers, digital still and video cameras. In 2008, Kew Primary began podcasting. With more than 15 shows now published and almost 3000 hits on our podcast website ( http://kewps.podbean.com/ ) , Kew students can now be heard around the world. Our podcast site has been visited by people from Canada, China, South Africa, England, Switzerland, Sweden, USA and more! It's a great way for us to showcase what is happening in our school community. In November, 2008, students from Busisiwe Primary School in Soweto, South Africa published a podcast on our site for the students of Kew PS. The podcast was about their school life. In response we published a podcast about school life in Australia. In 2009 we are continuing this new relationship with other podcast topics including our first topic of Sports.
