At Kew Primary School the commitment of parents and carers in supporting students’ learning is valued and appreciated.
Parental involvement in school curriculum activities:
- promotes the partnership of school and home
- supports student learning
- enhances classroom/school based programs
- develops parents’ understanding of the school’s curriculum programs and teaching approaches
- develops positive communication between teacher and parents
- provides opportunities for students to work with other adults
- allows the school to utilise parents’ special interests and expertise
- provides additional opportunities for students to work in small group or one-to-one situations.
Guidelines
Teachers are responsible for all aspects of the classroom program, student supervision and discipline.
Parents are to be guided by the teacher in:
- management of group activities
- understanding the varying capabilities of students
- maintaining confidentiality about students in relation to the wider community
- codes of conduct and disciplinary procedures.
Teachers are to ensure students are aware of the expectations of their behaviour under the care of parent/carer visitors.
Implementation
- Parent programs will be conducted at the school to support student learning (eg EYS Parent Helpers Program)
- Specific guidelines will be given by the teacher for the expectations of the activity
- Tasks should be achievable within the time allocated
- Rotation of students/groups should be considered
- Parents should inform the school if they are unable to meet their commitment to the program and teachers should notify parents when the program has to be cancelled
- The size and composition of the group and the group dynamics needs to be carefully considered by the teacher
- Groups working with parents must be overseen by a staff member
- Parent/Carers will be provided with the schools Code of Conduct, OHS, Emergency Evacuation plan and other relevant policies as determined by the Principal and will be issued a Visitor’s Badge
- Consideration of the parents’ support and time should be acknowledged by the teacher and celebrated by the school community at the end of year Parent Helpers’ Morning Tea
